(1838-91) Graduated from Princeton in 1857, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861, and commenced a practice in Freehold, N.J. He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly, 1860-62, serving as the speaker, 1861-62. He was commissioned a brigadier general of militia on May 27, 1861, and was in command of Camp Vredenburgh, 1862-65. He was a U.S. Congressman, 1867-71, which included the 40th Congress, which was the President Andrew Johnson impeachment congress. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872, and served as chairman of the State delegation. Served as prosecuting attorney of Monmouth County, N.J., 1873-91.
