(1816-94) Born in Delaware Co., Pa., studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840, and practiced in Chester, Pa. He served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1851-52; and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention of 1860. He answered Pennsylvania's call to arms twice during the Civil War; in September 1862, during the Confederate invasion of Maryland which resulted in the battle of Antietam (Captain, 16th PA), and in June 1863, during the Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania which resulted in the battle of Gettysburg (Captain, 29th PA). He served as U.S. Congressman, 1863-69, including the President Andrew Johnson Impeachment Congress; was chairman of the Committee on Accounts; was a delegate to the Pennsylvania constitutional convention of 1874; and served as judge of the Courts of Delaware County, 1874-75.
