(1828-1905) He attended private schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Irvine, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, 1855-56, and a presidential elector on the Republican ticket in 1856. He moved to Minnesota in 1860, and enlisted as a captain on on November 9, 1861, and was commissioned into the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. He was promoted to Judge Advocate of Minnesota Volunteers, and resigned on July 20, 1864. He settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1864, and resumed the practice of law. He was active in organizing the Republican Party in Arkansas, and was appointed chairman of the committee to prepare a code of practice for the State in 1868. Upon the readmission of the State to the Union, he was elected U.S. Senator, and served from 1868-73. He was the chairman of the Committee on Mines and Mining.
