U.S. Senator from Missouri
(1834-1915) Commanded a company of Missouri Militia at the battles of Carthage, Wilson's Creek and Elkhorn. Afterwards he commanded the Missouri Brigade at Vicksburg where he was captured. Appointed brigadier general, July 18, 1863, he led his brigade in the Atlanta campaign, and in Hood's Tennessee campaign. He was severely wounded at Franklin, Tenn., and captured at Mobile, Ala. in 1865, and by the war's end had been wounded 5 times. After the war he served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri.
