Circa: 1851 Publisher: Boston Vigilance Committee
Exceedingly rare broadside written by abolitionist Theodore Parker and printed after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law resulting from the Compromise of 1850 that required authorities in the North to assist Southern Slave Catchers and return runaway slaves to their owners. Citizens of Boston and other Northern towns organized to oppose and interfere with slave catchers in every possible way.
These printed broadsides were posted in Boston by the Vigilance Committee after the return of Thomas Sims to slavery in 1851. This particular broadside was posted on a sheet metal can having an orange red painted finish.
Dimensions of the paper broadside measure approximately 14"h x 9.5"w. The can itself measures approximately 20"h x 11.25" in diameter.
