Exceptional walnut Renaissance Revival Victorian work table or sewing cabinet. The shaped top was made with two pieces of book matched burled veneer giving it a beautiful vibrant quality. The top drawer has a concaved front with a shaped burled panel in the middle. The gorgeous interior is made of a light satinwood and features a number of small compartments. The underside of the lid has incise carved corners. A "secret" button in the top middle allows this lid to fall down exposing a desk top with the original blue fabric - looks like it was hardly ever used! A fancy gilt border surrounds the edge. This is all bordered by a darker satinwood. There is an original mirror under the lid (see photos). There is a pull out "basket" that drops down from under the top drawer. This has had a pleated fabric attached to it and has a wooden base to hold the fabric down. When this basket is removed you can see the lovely carved and burled bottom stretcher.
