Wonderful mahogany bookcase attributed to R.J. Horner, NYC. There is a dental molding below the cornice top. The front top features a mask at either end and in the middle with profuse carvings between them. There is a three dimensionally carved woman on each side of the case with lion and fruit carvings beneath. There are a pair of winged griffins above each front foot. The feet are decorated with a carved mask. There is an intricate carved molding around each of the doors. It has four adjustable mahogany shelves. The shelf supports are new. The number "1253" is stenciled on the back (see photo). Horner would often use a number to indicate the various model of furniture that was being offered. The identical bookcase in oak is shown on page 70 of "Victorian Decor" by Martin M. May. A great bookcase by one of the premier furniture makers of the period! Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 66"H x 63.5"W x 18.5"D Finish: Excellent original Price: $9,950.00
