The front top features a mask at either end and in the middle with profuse carvings between them. There is a three dimensionally carved woman on each side of the case with lion and fruit carvings beneath. There are a pair of winged griffins above each front foot. The feet are decorated with a carved mask. There is an intricate carved molding around each of the doors. Each bookcase has four adjustable mahogany shelves. The shelf supports are new. They both have the number "1253" stenciled on the back (see photo). Horner would often use these numbers to indicate the various models of furniture that they offered. These bookcases are identical in style. One has the original recessed castors but they were removed on the other. The finish on the one to the left in the photo is a bit lighter and smoother than the one on the right side. The identical bookcase in oak is shown on page 70 of "Victorian Decor" by Martin M. May. A great pair of bookcases by one of the premier furniture makers of the period! Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 66"H x 63.5"W x 18.5"D Finish: One is in excellent original finish. The other is fair to good finish with slight crazing. Price: $18,950.00 for the pair |
