Great carved oak bench attributed to R.J. Horner, NYC. This piece has a wonderful open figural and floral carved crest associated with Horner's work. The back and front of the seat are carved with flowers, gargoyles, masks and reclining figures. The curved arms have three dimensional heads and other carvings on the sides. The seat lifts up to reveal a large storage area. The bench rests on large bun feet. This bench is pictured on page 79 of "Victorian Décor" by Martin M. May. There is a number stenciled in the back - a trademark of Horner furniture. It is a great example of the quality and carving of one of New York City's premier furniture makers of the late Victorian era! Circa: 1890 Dimensions: 52"H x 56.5"W x 21.
