Very rare laminated rosewood Rococo Victorian swivel office armchair made by John Henry Belter, NYC. The laminated backs have a "S" scroll on either side with open carving at the top. The carving where the arms attach to the frame is very similar to the armchairs shown on page 96 of "American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. The back and seat are all set to be reupholstered in fabric or leather. The base has solid rosewood carved legs (some old solid repairs). When we purchased this piece the top would swivel but not go up and down. We had a small threaded piece professionally made so that it can now screw up and down. We have never owned a office chair by John Henry Belter before. We believe it to be one of very few made! Circa: 1850 Dimensions: 39"H (at lowest setting) x 23" Finish: Good old patina. Possibly refinished in the past. Price: $7650.00
