Rare Rococo Victorian oak chest made by Aaron Shaw, Cincinnati, OH. This piece has an oval mirror held in place by a fabulous open carved frame with naturalistic oak leaves, acorns and branches. There is a slight joint separation in the bottom of the mirror frame. One of the threaded knobs has been replaced and the threads are worn but the mirror still stays in place. The original marble has a serpentine front. It has been repaired in the past. The base has two burled front serpentine shaped small drawers over two full drawers. Each drawer has a knob pull, acorn carved key escutcheon, and a fancy molding around the edge. The front corners of the case are branch carved. This naturalistic style is unique to Cincinnati. Most pieces similar to this that we have seen over the years were made by Mitchells and Rammelsberg. We suspect that Shaw worked with that firm. We seldom see such elaborate pieces of oak from this period.
