Fantastic, all original mahogany grandfather clock made by Walter Durfee, Providence, RI. The case is nearly identical to the one on page 156 of "Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators" by Tran Duy Ly. The only difference is that the side and base panels are flat on this one although the interior panels are raised (see photo). Durfee made the best quality grandfather clocks of the period and this one has the beautiful carved moldings, panels, beveled glass doors, carved claw feet, fluted columns and brass finials that are common to his clocks. The tubes, movement and revolving moon dial are all signed. The dial itself is signed by "Theodore B Starr, New York" the jeweler that originally retailed the clock. It has a three weight movement and plays either Westminster chimes or eight bells. It has a special mercury filled brass pendulum (see page 233 of above book) that was made by Herschede. That company worked closely with Durfee. Clocks of this caliber are getting increasingly scarce.
