Exceptional mahogany c.1904 Gothic style grandfather clock made by Herschede. This clock is illustrated on page 239 in Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators by Tran Duy Ly. The case has carved spires and other applied carvings on the hood. Both the sides of the hood and the front door have an intricate Gothic open fretwork design. The movement was made by J.J. Elliott, England and was sold in this country to Herschede by Harris and Harrington. Elliott movements were considered one the best of their era. This one has nine tubes that play Westminster, Whittington and St Michael chimes. It has a second hand and plays a tune on each quarter hour and strikes the hour. The revolving moon dial has been repainted. The movement has been cleaned and is in good working condition. Most Gothic style clocks are imposing and massive.
