Very Rare Signed Patent Wooten Desk No 1613 Very rare signed "Patent Wooten Desk, No 1613, 1st May, 1875."
When closed this piece is a flat top desk with raised lift top writing
surface. We had a gold tooled leather top installed on the surface. When
the surface lifts up a storage area with several vertical cubbies is
revealed. Notice the knob on either side of this interior. When it is
pulled it unlocks the two swing out sides. When fully opened this desk is
a work of art and function. Each side compartment has twenty eight square
filing compartments. The sides of the kneehole have two small drawers over
five graduated drawers - each with an original wooden knob pull. The two
door compartment under the knee hole also has a vertical and horizontal file
unit. The back of the desk is paneled. There has been some professional
restoration. We were able to polish the original finish on certain portions
of the desk and other parts had to be refinished to match. Wooten desks are
considered the best and most innovative of the period. They were favored by
politicians and bankers in the late 1800's. Examples are shown on pages
186-199 of "American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and Richard
Dubrow. We have had other Wooten desks over the years but have never even
seen this model before. A rare masterpiece of design and function!
Circa: 1880
Dimensions: 37.5"H x 94"W (When fully opened) x 27"D
Finish: Excellent polished original. Some parts refinished to match

heavily carved crest features a carved bust with intricately carved finials
on each side. Incised carved moldings decorate each side corner of the top.
A shaped half round molding surrounds the edge of the two top doors. The
interior of the top has a lovely birdseye maple back and four original
shelves with rosewood fronts. The roll is mechanical - when the writing
surface is pulled out the roll goes up. The interior is gorgeous with seven
satinwood drawers with rosewood trim and satinwood open fretwork. The
writing surface is old - possibly original. We could have a leather
installed for a further charge. There is a drawer and a two door cupboard in
the base. There are applied carvings on the doors and carved pulls on the
drawer. The sides and bottom of the drawer are made of a vibrant birdseye
maple. A majestic secretary!

It has a fancy spindled gallery on top with a slanted lift top lid with the original fabric (some stains and wear but we only will replace it at the buyers request). The interior of the desk is exceptional with four drawers with light satinwood fronts with darker inlays. There are incised carvings at the top of the turned legs. An original key is in the lock which no longer works. The base has curved spindled stretchers. This piece has surprising quality and design for it's size. It has style elements associated with Allen & Brothers, Philadelphia but we can't make a definite attribution.

51103

Solid Carved Mahogany Figural Partner's Desk Fantastic solid mahogany partners flat top desk. This
incredible desk has a detailed carving around the top edge. The
surface has
a small gouge on the right side. The base has some of the best
carvings we
have ever seen on a desk. There are four full bodied men on each
side. The
two front doors have a carved woman holding a wreath (or tambourine)
surrounded by carvings. The center drawer has a lion head in the middle
with winged griffins on each side. The side panels feature a very three
dimensional depiction of a woman in a horse drawn chariot and a man
in the
background. When the doors open in the front of the desk they reveal
two
fitted drawers on the right and a file on the left. Both the front
and the
back of the desk are identical except the file on one side has
horizontal
slats and the other one (pictured) has vertical slats. The desk
structure
rests on eight carved round legs. They end on a platform with a carved
edge. The flat platform on the right side has some veneer wrinkles. It
might have been made by R. J. Horner, NYC but since we have never
seen this
model before we have no way to attribute it to that firm. This
amazing desk
is one of the best ones we have ever offered for sale!

81159

Victorian "Extra Grade" Wooten Desk Fabulous "Extra Grade" Renaissance Revival walnut
Victorian Wooten desk. Standard grade Wooten desks occasionally
appear on the market but we seldom see the more elaborate extra grade
desks. This piece was passed down from one generation to the next in
the Wallace family of Jamestown, PA. There is an original silver
presentation plaque above the roll. They moved to Florida and
recently decided to sell this wonderful piece. We obtained it in
untouched condition. The finish was very dry and flaked. We had it
professionally polished with hand rubbed shellac. Most Wooten desks
on the market today have been extensively restored and refinished.
This one retains it's original rich patina and has never been
stripped. All of the fancy cast brass hardware is original. The
letter slots in front have the following mottos: "Manufactured by
the Wooten Desk Co, Indianapolis, Ind, Pat. Oct. 6. 1874" and
"Letters" (see photos). The desk is decorated by extensive carvings
and raised burled panels with black and gold high lights. The lid of
the desk and interior drawers have birds eye maple fronts. It has
the original card board files on the right side with brass ring
pulls. We had a gold tooled leather writing surface installed. The
back of the desk is finished. It rests on large metal castors. The
right side drops a minute amount when the desk is open so it has to
be lifted in order to close the desk. This is the desk for the
serious collector - in excellent original condition with wonderful
provenance!

81157

Original Walnut Victorian Wooten Desk Fabulous all original walnut Renaissance Revival Wooten
desk.
This is the three hinge Standard grade desk very similar to the one
in the
Lolani Palace in Honolulu Hawaii (see page 188 of American Furniture
of the
19th Century by Eileen and Richard Dubrow.) This desk has the
typical fancy
gallery with open carving, fancy turned finials and raised burled
panels.
The case is decorated with raised burled panels, two inset curved burled
panels and the original iron hardware including one with the 1874 patent
date and one with "letters" where the secretary could deposit the
mail when
the desk is locked. The three hinges on each side and the handle to
open
the desk have a fancy decoration. When the sides swing open, the
left side
has a number of open file slots. The right side has all but one of the
original hard cardboard file drawers with the original brass ring pulls.
The middle of the desk has a drop down writing surface with an incised
birdseye maple front and a leather tooled leather writing surface on the
other side. The surface is held up by original incised iron sliding
rods.
The interior of the desk is gorgeous with combination of drawers and
open
files. The drawers have a lovely combination of light birdeye maple
fronts
with recessed dark walnut pulls. The files have the dark walnut outer
fronts. The back of the desk is also paneled and finished. The
castors on
the feet have been replaced. We have several of these "King of Desks"
before but never one in such wonderful original condition. Most Wooten
desks on the market today have developed a "sag" over the years from
being
left open for extended periods of time. Many also have extensive
restoration. This one fits nice and tight with no sag and it has all
the
original parts and finish. A really remarkable desk for the true
collector!
