Carved Bookcase by R. J. Horner Wonderful mahogany bookcase attributed to R.J. Horner, NYC.
There is a dental molding below the cornice top. The front top features a
mask at either end and in the middle with profuse carvings between them.
There is a three dimensionally carved woman on each side of the case with
lion and fruit carvings beneath. There are a pair of winged griffins above

Pair of Horner Carved Mahogany Bookcases Wonderful matched pair of mahogany bookcases attributed to
R.J. Horner, NYC. There is a dental molding below the cornice top. The
front top features a mask at either end and in the middle with profuse
carvings between them. There is a three dimensionally carved woman on each
side of the case with lion and fruit carvings beneath. There are a pair of
winged griffins above each front foot. The feet are decorated with a carved
mask. There is an intricate carved molding around each of the doors. Each
bookcase has four adjustable mahogany shelves. The shelf supports are new.
They both have the number "1253" stenciled on the back (see photo). Horner
would often use these numbers to indicate the various models of
furniture that they offered. These bookcases are identical in style. One
has the original recessed castors but they were removed on the other. The
finish on the one to the left in the photo is a bit lighter and smoother
than the one on the right side. The identical bookcase in oak is shown on
page 70 of "Victorian Decor" by Martin M. May. A great pair of bookcases by
one of the premier furniture makers of the period!
Circa: 1900
Dimensions: 66"H x 63.5"W x 18.5"D
Finish: One is in excellent original finish. The other is fair to good
finish with slight crazing.

91282

Four Door Carved Cherry Bookcase Four door carved cherry bookcase with a wonderful open carved
crest in the middle and an original brass gallery over each side section.
The two taller side sections have carvings in the top corners of the doors
and rope twist columns on the sides. (The original glass in the left
section has a crack in the very top. We wanted to keep the original glass
but this could easily be replaced with a new piece of glass if so desired.)
There are interesting carvings on the tops of each section and the two
middle drawers. There are three adjustable original shelves. The shelves
and back of the bookcase are made of oak.
(There are two age splits in the back of the bookcase - these do not affect
the structure and are not visible when the bookcase is filled with books.)
The three small brass knobs on the doors (see photo) are actually pulls/keys
that can be used to open and lock the doors - very interesting arrangement.
The drawers have very ornate cast brass pulls with Northwind faces. The
bookcase has the original brass castors. This will store a large number of
books in a very attractive way!
Circa: 1890
Dimensions: 75.5"H x 72"W x 17.5"D
Finish: Good original finish and patina
