191086

Fantastic Walter Durfee Grandfather Clock Fantastic, all original mahogany grandfather clock made by
Walter Durfee, Providence, RI. The case is nearly identical to the one on
page 156 of "Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators" by Tran Duy Ly. The
only difference is that the side and base panels are flat on this one
although the interior panels are raised (see photo). Durfee made the best
quality grandfather clocks of the period and this one has the beautiful
carved moldings, panels, beveled glass doors, carved claw feet, fluted
columns and brass finials that are common to his clocks. The tubes,
movement and revolving moon dial are all signed. The dial itself is signed
by "Theodore B Starr, New York" the jeweler that originally retailed the
clock. It has a three weight movement and plays either Westminster chimes
or eight bells. It has a special mercury filled brass pendulum (see page
233 of above book) that was made by Herschede. That company worked closely
with Durfee. Clocks of this caliber are getting increasingly scarce. This
is your chance to own one of the best!

Herschede Gothic Grandfather Clock
Exceptional mahogany c.1904 Gothic style grandfather clock made
by Herschede. This clock is illustrated on page 239 in Longcase Clocks and
Standing Regulators by Tran Duy Ly. The case has carved spires and other
applied carvings on the hood. Both the sides of the hood and the front door
have an intricate Gothic open fretwork design. The movement was made by
J.J. Elliott, England and was sold in this country to Herschede by Harris
and Harrington. Elliott movements were considered one the best of their
era. This one has nine tubes that play Westminster, Whittington and St
Michael chimes. It has a second hand and plays a tune on each quarter hour
and strikes the hour. The revolving moon dial has been repainted. The
movement has been cleaned and is in good working condition. Most Gothic
style clocks are imposing and massive. This one has a simple yet very
stylish elegance. A great clock!

Fabulous Durfee mahogany grandfather clock Fabulous mahogany grandfather clock with original signed (on
edge of movement and back of moon dial - see photos) "Walter Durfee" nine
tube three weight movement. The dial has silver chapter rings and fancy
filigree in the corners and middle. There is a second hand and the choice
between Westminster chimes or eight bells. We had the dial cleaned and
resilvered. The moon dial is in good original paint. This movement
features a rare three vial mercury filled pendulum. It is pictured on page
147 of Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators by Tran Duy Ly. The nine
tubes are original but unsigned.
The mahogany case of this clock strongly resembles one made by Herschede
shown on page 246 of the above book - although this one has triple carved
claw feet in the front. The case features a beveled glass door, reeded and
full columns on the sides, a carved wreath in the crest, fancy carved and
dental moldings, and panels on the sides. This is the second Herschede style
clock with an original Durfee movement that we have had. We are convinced
that the two companies has a close business relationship. This is a most
impressive clock with one of the finest cases and best of movements! The
works have been cleaned and the clock is in excellent working condition.
