Henry J. Nelson Hall Mirror Stunning Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian two part hall
mirror made by Henry J. Nelson, Burlington, VT. The marble and top of base are
signed. This piece has a large original mirror with protruding open carved
top crest. The arched top features etched carvings of twigs with leaves.
There are applied carvings on the top and bottom of the sides with etched
carvings in the middle of the sides and base. A drip stain is on the bottom
left side of the mirror frame. The serpentine front base has serpentine
legs and lovely open carved skirt with a bold fruit carving in the middle.
Original gorgeous gilt decoration highlights the various moldings and fills
the incised carvings. The gilt provides a rich contrast with the warm
original patina of the walnut. This would be a magnificent piece in a
hallway or at one end of a dining or living room!

61114

Signed Gustave Herter Library Table A rare Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian library table
signed "G. Herter" in two places (see photos). We had a gold tooled leather
installed in the top writing surface. The front of the desk has three
drawers whereas the back of the desk looks the same but has a drawer on each
side but not in the center (see photo). We have three old keys for the
drawers. One works the locks while the other two can be used to open the
drawers. One drawer was missing the lock and we had the missing area filled
with a piece of wood. This substantial table is tastefully decorated with
extensive applied rosettes, finials, and other carvings as well as raised
burled panels and columns. There is a solid center stretcher with carvings
and a flat portion in the center. Born in 1830, Gustave was the oldest of
the Herter Brothers. They are recognized as the premier furniture makers of
the late Victorian period having designed pieces for the White House,
Thurlow Lodge, Ruggles S. Morse mansion, and the Vanderbilt residence on
Fifth Ave, NYC. We seldom find pieces signed by Herter. We are excited to
be offering this truly rare piece!

291155

Allen & Brother Music Cabinet Important Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian music cabinet
attributed to Allen & Brother, Philadelphia. That firm was known for rich burl with ebonized highlights, Egyptian design motifs, and rare
sarrancolin marble. The latter was likely imported from France and is
seldom found on pieces other than those made by Allen & Brother. A table
with similar design elements can be seen on page 722 of the May 1996 issue
of "The Magazine Antiques." This cabinet features claw feet, bell flowers,
incised carvings in a burled panel, and a wonderful bronze bust of a young
girl set into the front of the cabinet. There is a very slight split in the
burled ring around the bronze. There is a key to help open the door. It
has burled panels in the sides. A gem!

Renaissance Slant Lid Desk with Inkwell Handsome Victorian Walnut Renaissance Revival Slant Lid Secretary Desk with an
unusual feature on the interior with an inset glass inkwell and curved pen holder. The top gallery has
a fancy acorn finial with elaborate carvings, decorative rosettes, and shaped raised burled panels.
Underneath is a deeply recessed panel with half round carvings, rosettes and pretty openwork on
the sides. The deeply recessed panels on this piece are especially well done (see photos of the lid
and doors). There are corresponding raised burl panels and rosettes on the lid and base along with
leaf and flower carvings on the side stiles. The two key holes have especially fine and delicate carvings
around them and there is the original, old large key. The interior has the original green cloth surface
(with many ink stains from the ages) and the original trim border, which we left intact. The interior
drawer fronts and slot trim is nicely burled with the original fancy knobs on the drawers. This
pretty secretary has several fine and unusual features!

31196

Huge Custom Made Walnut Cabinet Magnificent Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian custom made
cabinet. It has a burled gallery on the very top. The top has a drawer on
the right side and a fake drawer front on the left that pivots (see photo).
When the two large middle doors are opened a gorgeous and intriguing
interior is revealed. In the middle is a pullout drawer with incised
carved front that opens to display a desk. The desk has the original red
felt surface (some stains) and five small drawers with birdseye front.
There are also two totally hidden secret drawers that are spring loaded and
open into the back of the cubby in the middle of the interior. These
drawers are released by pushing on the thin birdseye maple strips that are
on the outer edges of the interior - an ingenious and, in our experience,
unique feature! There are four felt covered shelves above and five below
the desk section that pull out providing a wonderful display - work surface.
A burled panel on each side of each shelf is attached to the shelf and comes
out with it. When all the shelves are recessed this give the appearance of
a solid burled strip coming down on each side. There is a large drawer with
carved center in the middle of the base. Each side has a curved door and
bottom drawer with inset burled panels. There are two shelves in each side
cabinet. Notice the book matched burl walnut veneer on each side of the
cabinet where the veneer on each side is a mirror image of that on the
corresponding side. This huge piece was very likely made by Herter
Brothers, NYC. It has unsurpassed quality and construction. It was
certainly custom made for an architect, industrial designer, artist or
draftsman. Furthermore, the condition of the felt and wood suggests that
is was seldom used over the years. A most unique and exceptional piece!

has a very fancy open carved crest. There are two front panels that swing
out on chains to hold the music (or newspapers and magaizines). These flaps

incised carvings. The entire supporting frame has retained the original
gilt, ebony, and polychrome decorations. The red and bluish-green polychrome
colors are especially exciting since they are seldom found. A similar stand
from the Lightner Museum in Florida is shown on page 91 of "Styles of
American Furniture 1860-1960" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. This is a great
example of the Renaissance Revival style!
