Carved Walnut Victorian Lockside with Mirror Fine quality walnut Victorian gentleman's chest. It has an
original beveled glass mirror with open carved returns. The frame of the
mirror is all carved. It is held on to the frame by two large original
brass bolts on the side. There are five drawers with bookmatched burled
fronts and a secret drawer in the bottom. The smaller top drawer and the
sides of the chest have carvings. The drawers have the original cast brass
hardware accept for one of the round brass back rosettes has been replaced
with a larger one. The right side of the chest has a locking bar that
swings open to release the drawers. Originally this
mechanism was used to keep the maid out of the gentleman's chest. We have
the original working key for the lock. A handsome chest!

Narrow Faux Bamboo Lockside Chest Lovely proportioned faux bamboo maple lockside chest
attributed to R. J. Horner, NYC. This piece has an original beveled mirror
(some silvering loss on back) with a fancy spindled top and returns. There
are five drawers in the bottom with the standard R.J. Horner turned bar
pulls. The right side has a hinged bar that swings open to release the
drawers. The lock is original but we don't have a key that works it. A
quarter round faux bamboo molding decorates the edge of each drawer, mirror,
top of the chest and side panels. The right side of the chest is a bit
darker than the left - it was likely in one spot for a number of years where
one side received more light. This chest is a fine example of Victorian
faux bamboo furniture in good original finish and nice narrow size!

111226

Fossilized Gray Marble Aesthetic Oak Chest A fabulous quality Aesthetic Victorian oak chest with an
original very unusual fossilized gray marble with hints of white, black and
rust color. It has an arched beveled glass mirror with some diamond dusting
on the bottom. The top of the mirror frame and top drawer are intricately
carved with a floral and leaf design. The bottom two drawers have raised
panel fronts with an ornate carved key escutcheon. The drawers have
beautiful fancy brass pulls. The interiors are made of mahogany. There is
one divider missing in the top drawer. Carvings decorate the front sides
and bottom of the case. There are raised beveled panels on the sides of the
chest. The style, quality and design of this piece reminds us of pieces
made by Herter Bros and Associated Artists. There is a marking of "Store.
66654" under the marble and on two places on the back of the mirror but we
can not definitely identify the maker. A superb chest from the period!

111218

Very Rare F. W. Hutchings Rococo Corner Dress Very rare Rococo walnut Victorian corner dresser signed "F. W.
Hutchings, Broadway, NYC." There is a lovely open carved oval mirror held
between two fancy carved harps. The are round recessed bottom carved candle
cups on each side with ornate turned supports. The shaped original white
marble top had a repair to the left front corner. The serpentine shaped
front has four graduated drawers with raised moldings and tear drop pulls
(replaced). The back of the chest has been crudely cut out to fit in a
custom corner (see photo) but this can not be seen when it is in a corner
and it doesn't affect the sturdiness and structure of the piece. There are
a few minor vertical age separations on the sides. Hutchings was one of the
fine Broadway furniture makers that included Herter, John Henry Belter,
Julius Dessoir, Kimbel and Cabus, J and J Meeks, and Alexander Roux. This is
a form we have never seen before and to have it signed by a good maker makes
it most interesting!

111213

Rare Aaron Shaw Rococo Victorian Oak Chest Rare Rococo Victorian oak chest made by Aaron Shaw, Cincinnati, OH. This piece has an oval mirror held in place by a fabulous open carved frame with naturalistic oak leaves, acorns and branches. There is a slight joint separation in the bottom of the mirror frame. One of the threaded knobs has been replaced and the threads are worn but the mirror still stays in place. The original marble has a serpentine front. It has been repaired in the past. The base has two burled front serpentine shaped small drawers over two full drawers. Each drawer has a knob pull, acorn carved key escutcheon, and a fancy molding around the edge. The front corners of the case are branch carved. This naturalistic style is unique to Cincinnati. Most pieces similar to this that we have seen over the years were made by Mitchells and Rammelsberg. We suspect that Shaw worked with that firm. We seldom see such elaborate pieces of oak from this period. This is a very rare piece of Victorian signed furniture!

Impressive Renaissance Revival Marble Top Che Impressive Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian chest with an original white marble top (some normal staining on marble). It has a wonderful open carved crest with an incised carved burled panel and a fancy drop finial that is reflected in the mirror. The sides of the mirror frame have fluted burled panels, rounded candle cups, carvings and boxes on the bottom with burled tops and carved pulls. The base has three regular drawers and a "secret" drawer on the bottom. The finish on the bottom drawer has some scuffing and scratches - normal for a chest that has been used over the years. The burled drawer fronts have ornately carved centers around the key escutcheon. The top drawer has a compartmentalized maple interior. The corners of the case have a lovely combination of half columns, carvings, burled panels and cut outs. A wonderful example of Renaissance Revival style!
