Charcoal on board with applied marble dust, also known as a Marble Dust Painting. This was a popular mid 19th century medium used by amateur painters, often young woman who were inspired by the well known Hudson River School Painters of the time. This scene is an unusual subject as most were typical Hudson River Valley pastoral scenes. This example appears to be Venice. Many of the Hudson River School artists travelled and painted in Europe. Thus while it is an unusual subject for a Sandpaper Painting, it is entirely possible that this local artist was inspired by one of the views of Italy painted by one of the well known artists of the day. circa 1850. In very good unrestored condition. Framed in a period frame under old glass with archival backing. Painting size 18"x28", Framed size 21"x31". ** WE GUARANTEE THE AUTHENTICITY OF OUR MERCHANDISE AS REPRESENTED. MEMBERS OF: THE ANTIQUES COUNCIL, THE VERMONT ANTIQUES DEALERS ASSOCIATION (VADA), THE CAPE COD ANTIQUE DEALERS ASSOCIATION (CCADA). **
