A wonderful mid 19th Century Lap Desk or Travel Desk in an outrageously warm and figured mahogany mounted on all corners with brass and hugely decorated brass straps that go from the top to bottom of the box on either size. On the lower left hand corner of the box there is one replaced brass strap. When you open the box it has a hand tooled leather desk top surface. Both sides of the desk top open for storage. The top part of the desk surface is detached as generally they are – that is the point of where the leather folds. In the front of the box inside it has your pen compartment, inkwell compartment and a lidded compartment. There are no inkwells with the box but it can easily be fitted for square glass inkwells. The surface condition of the box is really rich and lustrous, it would appear that this finish is original and as you can see it has a decorative plaque and escutcheon on the front. This box measures 17 ½"l x 7"h x 10"w.
