N003

Antique Sextant Ivory Inlaid Original Fitted Wood Box Sextant w-Ivory inlay – Made by Spencer, Browning & Rust. This is a wonderful sextant. The wood is ebony and it has all brass mountings and mechanics. The optics seem to be all good and they are all present. On the ivory pieces as you can see they are marked Spencer, Browning & Rust. Overall the sextant is a little bit dirty – it just looks like it has been well used. I see the handle on the bottom is made of lignum vite and that is one of the hardest woods which were used often in nautical equipment. The sextant is housed in its original case with some other lens in their compartments. The case is in good condition, the mechanics are all very fine. This is a great nautical item dating from the 19th century. The box measures 13" at deepest x 12" at widest x 5" high.

Boat Nautical Diorama Antique The Raven 19th century ship model diorama of The Raven. It is an impressive diorama measuring 40"wide x 19"high x 11"deep. The hand made model rests in an unusual dimensional mirrored backed case surrounded with American black walnut and gold gilt moldings. It is in very good condition. At one time it may have had a glass front I’m not quite sure.

AD005

Antique Steamship Canadian Pacific Railway Engraving This is a very nice engraving of the steamship Manitoba. This is an advertisement for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company Upper Lake Steamships Passing Thunder Cape Lake Superior. It is signed on the lower right on the engraving itself. On the left it gives you a list of their steamship – Manitoba, Alberta, and Athabasca and over to the far right there are ports of call – Owen Sound, Sault Ste Marie, Port Arthur, and Fort William. This wonderful lithograph is housed in its original oak frame with a gilt silver interior border. The bottom of the frame has the initials carved in very fancy script CPR. It is a wonderful advertising piece from the 19th century. The condition overall is very good – the frame is really good. The interior silver leaf molding of the frame is quite pitted though. All around the edge of the engraving itself (the border) there is quite a bit of deterioration. It appears to me that with careful restoration this picture could be returned to its original glory. Overall it measures 48 ¾" x 34 ¾" and the sights size is 41 ½" x 27 ½". All in all here is a fabulous railway and steamship companies collectors engraving that would make a great addition to your collection!

N026

Antique Nautical Small Ship Model Hand Made An excellent example of a small ship model that I suspect dates form the early 1900’s. This model was completely made by hand and not from a kit in any way. The detail is very fine – the rigging is 97% all there and intact. The model I believe is in its original paint which is green on the bottom half of the hull and black on the upper half of the hull. There are lots of little things going on like a life boat on the top. It is very attractive and in the most fantastic size for on top of the mantel or in a cabinet. It does however have one little old repair on the bow of the boat model. It is very hard to see and it is very sound. All in all it is in very good condition. It would make a wonderful gift for the nautical enthusiast. It measures approx 17 ½" at widest x 7" at deepest x 14 ¾" at highest.

Folk Art Ship Diorama The Alabama A very special & interesting nautical item here! Nautical Diorama, completely hand made .This is the Alabama; the setting is really a great one .The background is completely hand painted with other ships in the background. The details of the ship model are really very good, I love the smoke coming out of the stack, and it is actually made from cotton! This diorama is in very good condition, a few pieces of the ocean floor have some cracks & light separations ,but that’s to be expected from a folk art piece like this that is at least 100 years old. Measuring 24 ½" Wide x 14" High x 7" Deep.

Click for more detail...
aa3016

Old Photograph Whale Boats 1910 A real old photograph from the collection of Frank E Claes of Camden Maine. This photo of "Whale Boats at the west end of Muskeget Island Mass. Looking east" Photo taken in 1910. Housed in a brand new simple complimenting frame measuring 9 7/8" x 8".
In 1985, Down East Books of Camden, Me. published a book called WALDO COUNTY - The Way It Was by Frank E. Claes, formerly of Camden, Me,, and residing in Orland, Me. at the time that the book came out. At that time, Down East published 1062 books.
The book included each of the towns of Waldo County, as it was in 1859, including Appleton, Camden, Hope, North Haven, Rockport, and Vinalhaven.
Claes, a very accomplished photographer, had opened a portrait studio in Camden in 1950. He also copied and made negatives for people, as well as for Historical Societies, Museums, and libraries. He was from the old school, keeping a copy of the negatives of the photos, so that people went back to him for copies. He specialized in reproducing copies of Maritime history, including photos of many ships. He said that he held the largest collection of Maritime negatives of anyone in the State.
He wanted to have a book published of his Maritime photos, but had Down East Books do first, WALDO COUNTY - The Way It Was. In the book, Claes had used the brief history of each town in the county from A Gazetteer of the State of Maine, to which he added a copy of the map of each town, taken from the 1859 Schoolhouse map, which showed the location of each house, factory, sawmill, schoolhouse, businesses, etc., including their names.
About that time, several photographers were doing the same, taking photos of each town separately, including famed Belfast photographer, Walter Dickey, and Leland Overlock of Warren. But the other photographers did not have the foresight to do a book such as Claes did.
Claes had photos of the Maritime and coastal area of Waldo County, but he did not have photos of the inland towns. Author Frank E Claes "Waldo County :The way it was 1985
