aa2889

Folk Art Doll Signed By Barbra Merry In the great state of Maine, here in Waldo County lives a long time celebrity of these parts! Her name is Barbara Merry & she has been famous for her work in the restoration & making of country hooked rugs. I heard about this famous Lady when I first moved here over thirty years ago, She was the go to person if you had a great hooked rug in need of repair. She did faithful restoration by unraveling old damaged rugs & using the old perfect color yarns to do repairs that were undetectable. I believe that Barbara Merry is still among us & is quite elderly. The Merry family is a large one with all of its member’s long time Maine Antique Dealers! Quite a Legacy. For the lover of country & primitive antiques, you’ll just adore this one of a kind completely hand made Folk Art Doll. Fresh from a Rockland Maine Estate. This doll has a crudely hand carved wood face, arms & upper body. The wood appears to be pine with a mellow surface patina. On the back of the head is signed in pen, Made by Barbara Merry. The facial features are all painted on the wood. The clothing made of various scraps of fabric is all stitched by hand; this doll is wearing a brown dress with colorful edge & a black jacket with old ecru color lace at sleeves & neck. Under the dress is a lacey slip & over that a tiny all over print cotton slip. A crocheted hat sits upon her head. All in this entire folksy doll is in good condition & as I look at this doll I can almost feel Barbara Merry making her with all of the loving creativity as a tribute & a salute to every woman! Measuring 18" Long.

Hand Painted Wooden Safe 1885 W.W.Bird Now here is an unusual collectible for sure! A wooden safe .The small free standing safe is made of wood, in the original black paint .Stenciling on the front "WW BIRD" "1885" in the top panel & in the bottom panel is a hand painted wooded lake scene. The overall look is that of a heavy cast iron safe with the black color & the rivets .It is on iron castors ,has a brass combination lock that actually works & even better , I have the combination!!!The inside of the safe is beautifully fitted & restored with small drawers & cubby holes .This little bugger is spectacular .It measures only 22" High x 11" Deep x 15" Wide & yet it is quite a heavy .This really is the coolest little piece! I can see it being used & on display just about anywhere. When was the last time you saw a hand painted wooden safe?

Click for more detail...
TOY004

Antique Still Bank Cast Iron Pig Here is the most cunning little antique still bank pig. It appears to have its original cream putty type color base – with little brown eyes. The colors are so life like and real. There are remnants of pink in the pig’s ears and along his mouth and snout. The animation is perfect – he has a great look. He has a goofy little smile on his face. As you can see by the pictures the casting was done in two pieces. He stands on a platform with a plaque that reads THRIFY on the front. He is also holding a sign that reads – THE WISE PIG SAVE A PENNY YESTERDAY ANOTHER SAVE TODAY TOMORROW SAVE ANOTHER TO KEEP THE WOLF AWAY. There is an impressed mark on the back for the copyright which reads - © J.M.R. As you would expect there is some chipped off paint loss here and there. But it is very sturdy and quite the collectible item. I would suspect that this bank would be fairly rare. I have had lots and lots of banks but I have never had this particular subject. The detail is fabulous and realistic (except of course for the smile). I can’t say enough about how precious he is all the way down to his curly little piggy tail. He measures 6 ¾" at highest x 2 ¾"w x 2 7/8" deep.

TOY005

Authentic Antique Still Bank Puppy Dog on Pillow This is one of my all time favorites with a sweet little puppy sitting on a pillow. He retains at least 99% of the original paint and the detail is very comical and great. On his collar around his neck it is embossed FIDO. It is quite a heavy bank it has the slot in the back of his collar for the coins. He measures 7 ½"l x 5 1/8"w x 6"h. Sweet little guy – patented date on the back that appears to say 1914.

TOY006

Authentic Antique Mechanical Bank Jonah and The Whale Wonderful Mechanical Bank from I believe the 1890’s. This one is Jonah and the Whale. This bank has its name on the front of the base which shows a sailor about to through Jonah to the whale – place the coin on Jonah’s back and press the leaver on the left side of the base and the penny or coin flips into the whale’s mouth. This one is in fairly good condition retaining about 75% of all the original paint. It measures 9 ¾"l x 5 ¼"h x 3 3/8"w. The mechanics are working very well.

Click for more detail...
TOY008

Antique 1700's Wood Furniture Miniature Still Bank Here is something quite spectacular - I have never in my career ever seen anything like this one. It is a miniature bow front chest dating from the 18th Century. It is mahogany with highly figured birds eye maple veneers and a lighter color banded inlay. The drawer pulls are made of whale ivory. The back as I hope you can see is moveable. It is on hinges and I believe that this miniature chest did start out as a bank and it looks like it has had a little bit of restoration in those areas like changed hinges. What makes me think it was originally a bank is because the back board is made of the exact same wood as the rest of the chest. It has the same color patina and surface built up. As you can see the chest leans a little bit to the left it looks like there has a been a little bit of a wear to the front foot which does not touch the ground. The surface patina is so rich and mellow and just screams handmade. I like it a lot! The bank back originally had a little key – and I believe that key has been missing for some time. What a unique item this is! I would think that not only a bank collector would love this but also a person who collects fine 18th century furniture (the real thing) or miniature furniture – salesmen samples and toys. As I said I just love this piece and I can’t say enough about it – it is fabulous. It measures 6 ½"h x 5 ½"w x 2 ¼" deep.
