D0013
Antique Hand Fan Tiffany Gold Silver Watercolor Take a look at this most amazing hand fan - signed on the fan ring Tiffany & Co 14k. The base and end sticks are mother of pearl with scrolls and floral designs carved right through the mother of pearl. It is then lavishly enameled or overlaid with real gold and silver. All of the lace is incredibly embroidered with tiny gold sequins. In the center of the fan there is a silk panel which is a watercolor painting - signed at 5 o’clock with the signature of the artist which appears to be "A Fray". As you can see the central painted scene is of two women in colonial dress sitting on a park bench as a gentleman comes calling. This magnificent fan is in its original silk covered lined box marked Tiffany & Co inside and having the initials "H G" in gold on the box top. There is a label on the bottom of the box of "C Leviele" maker and repairer of Fans Shell and Bric-a-Brac 12 east 37th St New York. The box has a bit of soiling on the outside as you would expect. The Fan is in an excellent state of preservation although sadly it has split on the central 2 sections of the fan right on the watercolor painted part - but all in all I feel that this fan is very rare. It should be a simple repair for the fabric restoration artist. The fan has all 18 sticks and is very sound other than those two splits that I mentioned earlier. Closed it measures 9 5/8" long x 1 5/8" at widest – open it measures 18" at widest.

D0017
Victorian Compotes Bronze mounted Here is a very interesting of pair of aesthetic movement obelisks. These were generally found on each side of a clock. This particular pair is made of very highly polished black slate. They have fairly deep engraved designs that are incised with gold. They have a brass or bronze central column and rests on five brass or bronze flat coaster style feet. It has hugely stylized winged griffin handles on each side. In the center there is a portrait medallion roundel of quite possible a roman emperor. The obelisks are in very good condition and again they are aesthetic movement. They date from the 19th century. Even though they original flanked either side of a mantel clock they would still be a wonderful decoration either on the sideboard or fireplace mantel – one on each end. And if you have a garden tub in the bathroom in a black, white and gold design they would also be spectacular sitting right there. They measure 10 ¼" at widest x 9 ¾" at highest x 7 1/8" at deepest.

Click for more detail...
D078
Antique Silk Needlework Embroidery Framed An absolutely beautiful specimen here of early 19th century needlework. The needlework is very fine embroidery with high and low spots on silk. It is of an interior scene which is very unique. Some of the background is also in watercolor such as the faces of the man and the lady and the window panes in the background. There is a lot of work here. I suspect that this scene is taking place in the music room. It appears that the piano teacher or music teacher is sitting in a chair and giving instructions to the young lady standing beside him. There are wonderful curtains in the windows, flower vases on the piano with a piano stool, and an instrument lying on the ground which is similar to a mandolin. To the left of the man you can see a large fireplace which is rather ornate, a teapot and teacup on the table next to where he is sitting. This needlework is a very nice frame – it is simple in design. The interior of the frame is ebonized wood and the exterior is carved wood with gesso and gold gilt. Now for the bad news – the needlework is defiantly starting to disintegrate. But it is in good enough condition that one could send it to a restoration house and save its life. Something like this needs to be preserved. I understand that there are places in England that specialize in needlework preservation. This lovely interior scene which is quite unique measures 16 ½" x 21 ½" overall and the sight size is 10 ¼" x 15 1/8". For more antique needlework items be sure to check out our website in its entirety - we have several unique and rare pieces available.

Click for more detail...
D079
Kyoto Satsuma Incense Vase Gold Gilt Enamel 19th Centur This is a gorgeous, elegant and highly detailed Meiji Period Kyoto Satsuma Incense Vase with the Shimazu Clan Crest. The vase is signed by the artist which might possibly be Meizan. The vase depicts 30 men with some holding scrolls (open and closed) with one man as the focus. They could perhaps be immortals or more likely scholars. Religious and mythological figures have always been a feature of Chinese and Japanese ceramics often depicting gods, holy men, ascetics and the heroes and incidents of Chinese and Japanese legend. The detail here is profound and intricate. Among the men there are pagodas and ornate designs in high and low relief consisting of gold gilt and colored enamel. There are two dragons embracing the vase one in the body and the other in much higher relief swirling towards the top of the vase resting on the lid. Again the detail is stunning down to the dragon’s teeth and tongue. As you can the base has two Shimazu Clan Crests one on either side resting on three scrolled feet. I was able to find two very similarly decorated vases as this one on page 159 and 160 of Japanese Export Ceramics 1860-1920 by Schiffer. They date from 1860-1910. The vase measures 11" at highest with a 4 ½"overall diameter.

D0015
2 Empire Period Gilt Brass Curtain Tie Backs Here is an outstanding pair of American Empire period curtain tie backs. In gold gilt brass –they are a bit more shimmery in real life, having some spots burnished higher than other spots to give the tie backs the most dramatic deep dimension. The condition is perfect except for some oxidation spots & I have included a picture of them, they are hardly noticeable. Measuring 6 ½" long x 4 ¼" wide. They date from the very early 1800"s (1820-1830).

D002
Gold Gilt Cherubs Angels Positions Set of 4 Very interesting set of 4 winged cherubs. I believe this set dates from sometime in the early 1900's. They are made of a plaster type material with gesso and real gold leaf. The detail is very good; they have a lot of form and movement. The cherub sits nearly 8" tall. They are in good condition - there is a separation here and there, for example on the wings where they were applied to the body. Two of the cherubs are meant to be hung on the wall, I suppose, because they have a little inserted hook on the back of them. And then there is a seated cherub and one cherub lying on his little chubby belly with his back foot in the air. Nice display for a fireplace mantle or an Italianate bathroom setting. The quality of these cherubs is superb; unfortunately I could not capture the exquisite beauty & detail with my limited camera skills!

D006
Glass Cruets Gold Gilt Communion Set Here is an elegant and sophisticated Communion Set consisting of 3 assembled pieces. It has a gilt bronze tray with two cruets which are made of deeply engraved and incrusted glass mounted again in bronze. There are four religious enameled circular symbols of an angel, a stylized dove, a lion, and a lamb. The work is seriously fine and the cruets are studded with enamel roundels as well. There is a deep hallmark punch mark but I am unable to make it out. My guess is that this set is Russian appears to date from some time in the early 1900’s. It is in very good condition with only minor wear that you would expect form such an item. The tray measures 11" at widest x 6 ½" at deepest. The cruets are 6 1/8" at highest x 3 5/8" at widest (including handle). Fabulous set – if you like it in the pictures you will die when you see it in person!

D007
Arts Crafts Era Hanging Wall Pocket Horse Dogs This is a very nice Arts & Crafts item here and functional indeed. The three tired wall pocket is made of oak with a reddish colored surface on it and on each fold out panel there is a brass frame with a picture in it. On the top you can see the round frame with a horses head in it. In the middle there is a square frame with all dogs in a back yard barking at a cat sitting in a tree over a fence (it is really cute). And in the next framed picture the poor cat is not doing so well – I suppose he went over the fence or the dogs did – but the poor kitty is sitting there and the dogs are barking at him – it is OK the cat will manage just fine, I have cats I have faith. The working mechanics of the fold out pockets is very good. On the top it has 3 hand hammered rivet squares in brass for decoration. It has two hangers on the top that will hang it nicely and safely. It dates from the early 1900’s – it is in wonderful condition and would make an outstanding gift. This is a highly collectible Arts & Crafts item. It measures 28"h x 11 ¾"w x 4 ¾ deep when pockets are open.

D009
Antique Table Bell Brass Marble Cat Dog Here is a totally precious item – it is a table bell in super rich brass and marble. It has a totally wonderful subject of a little cat and a dog sleeping quietly together. The detail is exceptional as I hope you can see in the photographs. The bell looks like a real sapphire but it is cobalt blue glass. It appears that the bell should be in working order – it still has the original cord attached to it and the marble base is so richly figured. The detail as I said is exceptional – I suspect that it dates from the 1880’s to the early 1900’s. It measures 1 3/8" at highest x 4 1/8" long x 3" wide.

D0014
Rooster Card Reciever Marble & Bronze Here is a nice early 1900’s desk or table item. A nice piece for the credenza in the receiving hall to display your business cards on or to receive business cards on from your guests. The base of it is all black marble with I guess natural veining of a gold color and some gray veining. The roster mounting on the marble tray is stamped Austria and is quite decorative. I believe it is bronze and I see remnants of some color which leaves my to believe that it originally it had some touches of color like a cold painted Austrian bronze. I believe the rooster has had some old repair which is not obvious unless you are looking with a jewelers loop. It is a very nice attractive piece with a rooster in monumental feather detail. Quite the heavy piece measuring 13 1/8"l x 8 1/8"w and it measures to the top of the roosters head almost 6".

Antique Primitive Brass Scale Philadelphia Here is an exciting 19th century brass scale – it is somewhat primitive in nature. It is completely hand made. It is stamped on the top by the maker – J. Wilbank Philada – Philada is the way they use to abbreviate Philadelphia in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is quite the spectacular scale – the pans as you can see are hand forged iron. The entire scale is in very good condition. It has a great patina on the brass – this is just the way we found it. It measures 27" at highest x 27" at widest. The diameter of the large scale is 13" and the diameter of the small scale is 9".

D055
3 Antique Embroidered Silhouettes Framed This is a nice collection of three silhouettes. Male and female figures appear to be black cotton thread on white linen. The smaller one also appears to be white linen with a scene of two men on a stage coach with a horse pulling it. It measures overall 4 ¾" x 3 1/8" and the sight size is 3 3/8" x 2 ¼". The male and female embroiders or silhouettes are in very simple black ebony frames. They are same size measuring 5 5/8" x 4 ¾" overall and the sight size is 4 5/8" x 3 5/8". The frame on the stage coach embroidery appears to be a stained mahogany on a little bit of the reddish side. All three of these silhouettes date from approx the early 1930’s. They are in very good condition and extremely presently. It is a nice little collection for any little niches that needs decorating or the silhouette collection.

D060
Antique Vintage Hand Fan Ivory Monogrammed Interesting Vintage Hand Fan made of 18 ribs in solid ivory. What I love the most about this fan is the amazing carved Initials on the 1st rib. I hope you can see it well enough in the pictures. The carving is just so fine, so thin, so flowing! The 1st and last ribs are very thick. The inner ribs are held together with a silk ribbon that is woven in and out of each rib through a silt in the rib. At the base of the ribs where they all come together they are fastened by a large rhinestone that is so nice it looks like a Georgian cut diamond! The condition of this fan is very good as far as the ivory ribs go. Most of the ribbon has detached from its connecting rib but again the Ivory is perfect. Just for the heck of it I weighed this fan on my digital postal scale and it weighs a little over 4 ounces! That’s a lot of ivory! It measures 8 ½" high and each rib measures 1 1/4" wide at the top and when the fan is open all the way it measures 15" across. Fresh from a fine Rockland, Maine Estate.
